Ten-Year Old National Harbor Provides Options, Flex Space and Tips for Experiential Meetings and Events

NATIONAL HARBOR, Md., March XX, 2018—Top meeting and event planners recognize the importance of creating meetings, conventions and events that are memorable. Growing numbers of meeting attendees are taking family members along on work trips so that they can either enjoy after-meeting hours together or can extend their stay to see the region.

National Harbor, Washington, D.C.’s prime waterfront destination, is the perfect destination for memorable meetings and events as well as a great place for an extended stay. There are few places around the country that provide a comprehensive, master-planned waterfront destination within close proximity to a major city. Access in and around National Harbor is easy and there are many opportunities to customize meetings and events of all sizes.

With eight hotels, more than 3,400 total hotel rooms and more than 470,000 square feet of meeting and event space, National Harbor can scale up or down. There’s plenty of bus and auto parking and the streets are easy to navigate, park and walk. Attendees can enjoy everything from contemporary-styled rooms to plush suites with water views.

Meeting space ranges from the traditional meeting rooms of all sizes to Gaylord National Resort’s new 16,000 sq. ft. ballroom and MGM National Harbor’s meeting rooms and state-of-the-art theater, to space availability for 10,000 sq. foot tents on National Harbor’s piers, a wide array of additional outdoor spaces for tenting.

“We’ve hosted successful events that incorporate our many flexible spaces, from weddings to corporate,” explained Rachel Ball, National Harbor’s director of events. “Some planners have integrated the Capital Wheel as well as cruise boats into their events.” The Capital Wheel is National Harbor’s iconic 180-foot wheel with climate-controlled cars. There are breathtaking views from the top that include seeing some of Washington’s monuments.

“If you want to have a memorable meeting in a location that is easy to reach, National Harbor is the perfect place,” said Deborah Topcik, director of marketing at National Harbor. “Visit National Harbor provides easy one-stop shopping and meeting planners can book a small meeting or National Harbor-wide event—all with added experiences.”

Topcik and Ball provide the following tips for successful and memorable meetings at National Harbor:

 Take advantage of the location. While National Harbor has so much to do, visitors can spend days there, Deborah and Rachel recommend taking advantage of the close location to Washington, D.C., Alexandria, Va. and Mt. Vernon—all reachable by water taxi from
National Harbor.

 Make use of the whole property. At National Harbor, there are city-wide opportunities. Instead of just booking one venue, meeting planners can integrate additional properties, restaurants, bars and spaces. There are multiple outdoor venues, including the waterfront piers that are easily tented. Fleet Street provides additional entertainment and after-hours options. There are boat rentals and river cruises available.

 Offer exercise options. National Harbor has regular yoga and exercise classes on its waterfront plaza. These can be customized for specific groups. Walking trails throughout provide an opportunity for an organization to hold its own 5K run or plan group walks along the river. Peddle boats and paddle boards provide another great exercise option.

 Include fun entertainment options. National Harbor offers everything from world-class concerts at MGM National Harbor, to sunset rides on the Capital Wheel where visitors can enjoy a glass of wine in the fully enclosed, climate-controlled cars. Fleet Street at National Harbor features a variety of bars and entertainment as well. Peddle boats and paddle boards will also keep everyone entertained. And, there’s the Urban Pirates attraction. A pirate ship that features family adventures on the Potomac during the day and adult (bring your own grog) boat trips at night.

 Shopping options. There are many times when an attendee realizes suddenly that they forgot to pack an important item. Conveniently, Tanger Outlets at National Harbor features 85 premium designer brands. The outlet works with groups on special shopping events, on-site receptions and other options. There are another 75 shops at National Harbor that include boutiques (SJP by Sarah Jessica Parker, Fink’s Jewelers, MCM, MGM & Co., Breitling, Accents Home & Garden, and more) in the MGM National Harbor as well as shopping in downtown National Harbor.

 Take advantage of the sunsets. National Harbor has been listed as one of the top 25 places in the country to capture the best sunsets. This is when visitors are even more grateful to be on the east side of the Potomac River.

 Include spouse and family options in itineraries. Encourage attendees to bring their families and you’re more likely to get more attendees. There are a lot of fun activities at National Harbor and water taxis are also available to take visitors to other locales for sightseeing.

 Include extended stay options in your meeting plans. Since Washington, D.C. is such an iconic city and National Harbor has so much available to see and do, it’s important to include opportunities for event and meeting attendees to easily extend their stay and have a great itinerary.
