National Harbor Provides the Perfect Destination for Solo Travel
Property experiences national trend of growing numbers of visitors traveling alone
NATIONAL HARBOR, Md., Sept. 9, 2024—Washington, D.C. was just rated the top city for “all by yourself adventures”, according to a study just released by Kayak and Open Table. According to the study, 50% of Americans are expecting to travel alone this year and six in 10 will dine as a party of one. Kayak and Open Table found that solo travel is on the rise with a 38 percent increase in solo hotel room bookings since 2018.
Although National Harbor lies in Maryland, it is minutes away (and a water taxi ride) from Washington, D.C. and it’s positioned as a great destination for solo travelers. “Between our wide variety of hotels and dining experiences to the many activities National Harbor offers and our signature events, it’s a great location for those traveling alone,” said Deborah Topcik, director of marketing at National Harbor.,
In response to the report as well as the statistics that solo travel is quickly growing, National Harbor has created a dynamic travel itinerary, Solocation, for solo travelers. For approximately $500 (plus tax and gratuities,) singles can have an activity-packed overnight experience. The itinerary includes overnight in a waterfront hotel, meals, a ride on The Capital Wheel (180-foot wheel with gondolas,) and other perks and tickets to events throughout the year.
“Single travel is growing at National Harbor, just as it has nationwide,” said Topcik. “We wanted to create an itinerary where singles could enjoy the many activities and amenities at National Harbor. There is so much available to see and do and visitors can opt for a day trip, an overnight, or a weekend getaway to feel rejuvenated.”
Solo travelers report that they prefer traveling alone as it allows them the flexibility to better see and experience places they haven’t been. Some also report that traveling alone creates a sense of adventure.
National Harbor’s location, easy access and large portfolio of hotels, restaurants, shopping, waterfront activities and special events—all situated on a pristine waterfront, makes it the ideal destination for singles. Since it first opened 16 years ago, National Harbor has become a major Mid-Atlantic destination welcoming more than 15.2 million visitors each year. Located close to Washington, D.C. museums and monuments and just across the river from Old Town Alexandria, Virginia (and historic Mount Vernon,) National Harbor provides the best of the region with eight hotels. The destination offers more than 40 boutique shops, plus Tanger National Harbor and 40 restaurants. For those who are active there are bike rentals and walking/biking trails along the waterfront; an outdoor art exhibit; outdoor exercise classes; kayak, paddleboard rentals and guided experiences from REI and charter boat rentals.
