Local Motors To Open Location at National Harbor
Cutting-edge company plans to build Micro-factory and Experiential Retail space as development hub for innovation vehicles
National Harbor, January 12, 2015 – Peterson Companies announced today that Local Motors, a technology company that designs, builds and sells vehicles, will open a new location at National Harbor in late 2015. Local Motors is known for revolutionizing the industry by combining co-creation, technology and micro-manufacturing to locally build innovative vehicles at unprecedented speeds.
The 45,000 sf Local Motors facility at National Harbor will comprise a 20,000 sf Lab that will be used for co-creation, research, technology, education and free community events, a 15,000 sf Showroom and Retail Store, and a 10,000 sf Build Floor for light assembly of products and vehicles. This will be the first location for Local Motors in the East Coast and the first location in the world to debut the first fleet of 3-D printed cars using the company’s proprietary three-phased manufacturing process.
“Local Motors is changing the way you experience motor vehicles,” said Jay Rogers, Local Motors CEO and co-founder. “From design to build to purchase to service, our micro-factories are a central hub for engaging both online and physical communities, advancing technology, and creating a first-of-its-kind experiential retail concept.”
“From the moment we toured the Local Motors facility and met Jay Rogers and his team, we knew that this was exactly the type of visionary, cutting edge, state-of-the-art company that would be a perfect fit for National Harbor,” stated Milt Peterson, Principal and Chairman, Peterson Companies. “We are proud to bring this revolutionary concept to the Washington, DC region and look forward to seeing the first 3-D printed cars, trikes and even skateboards cruising the streets of National Harbor.”
The concept of co-creation is an essential element of Local Motors – bringing together its internal teams, the virtual community and the physical community to submit and vote on designs, ideas and prototype solutions. The company then works with a community of partners, suppliers, investors, fabricators, engineers and designers to manufacture and sell these products. The result of this co-creation is a Local Motors portfolio of vehicles that includes: The Rally Fighter (a luxury race car), The Racer (a high-tech motorcycle), The Cruise (a motorized bicycle), The Verrado (an electronic drift trike), and the world’s first fleet of 3D-printed car.
Local Motors debuted the first 3D-printed car at the 2015 North American International Auto Show (NAIAS). Called the Strati, the vehicle is the first in a line of 3D-printed cars. Local Motors at National Harbor will be the first location in the world to print, refine and assemble a fleet of 3D-printed road ready cars with availability as early as late 2015. This puts Prince George’s County and the State of Maryland at the leading edge of an industry that is anticipated to explode in the coming years.
Local Motors at National Harbor is expected to create more than 100+ jobs and combine retail, education, technology and entertainment in a single location where the community can see and participate in social production through idea sharing, events, exhibitions and tours.
