Jiro Dreams of Sushi

Join us on the Plaza for Jiro Dreams of Sushi at 2pm.

JIRO DREAMS OF SUSHI is the story of 85-year-old Jiro Ono, considered by many to be the world’s greatest sushi chef. He is the proprietor of Sukiyabashi Jiro, a 10-seat, sushi-only restaurant inauspiciously located in a Tokyo subway station. Despite its humble appearances, it is the first restaurant of its kind to be awarded a prestigious three-star Michelin Guide rating, and sushi lovers from around the globe make repeated pilgrimage, calling months in advance and shelling out top dollar for a coveted seat at Jiro’s sushi bar.

Dreaming of Japan: A Garden Love Story Webinar with gardener Frances Vandenbroucke, from Hillwood Estate Museum & Gardens

Join us for an entertaining and educational webinar with gardener Frances Vandenbroucke, from Hillwood Estate Museum & Gardens!

For over 150 years we have been fascinated by the gardens and landscapes of Japan. In this webinar, gardener Frances Vandenbroucke explores how Japanese garden style arrived in the West, spread, and evolved, becoming a permanent part of our cultural landscape. She will then take a closer look at the Japanese-style garden at Hillwood Estate, Museum & Gardens in Washington DC, designed in 1957 by Issei landscape architect Shogo Myaida.

Frances Vandenbroucke is a member of the horticulture staff at Hillwood Estate, Museum & Gardens, the Washington DC home of Post Cereal heiress and General Foods director Marjorie Merriweather Post. For nearly 20 years Frances has been responsible for the maintenance and preservation of the Japanese-style garden on the estate designed by Issei landscape architect Shogo Myaida. Previously she was the horticulturist at Woodlawn and Frank Lloyd Wright’s Pope-Leighey House, a National Trust historic site in Virginia. She received her horticultural training at Northern Virginia Community College.
